Smartphones, much more than phone calls.

It is probable that you have ever heard what a smartphone is or even you have one. If not, you’d better catch one as fast as you can, cause once you start discovering the wide range of apps (applications), widgets and tools these devices offer you, you won’t be able to stop using them!

First of all, I would like to introduce some of the most-used apps which have been developed to keep you in touch with friends. They let user access social networking sites, like Facebook or Twitter, and communicate wherever you are with the rest of the world.

At this stage, I must mention Whatsapp Messenger. This cool app is a ‘must’ in every smartphone. Once installed on your device (Android, iPhone, BlackBerry and Symbian OS are supported), it allows you to exchange messages, photos and videos with all your contacts who run Whatsapp too, and totally free! The only requirement to make it work is a data connection, so it’s better if you contract a data plan with your existing cellular service or use a Wi-Fi connection and then say bye-bye to SMS! Are you in Facebook, Twitter or MySpace? Or maybe, are you in all of them at the same time?

Nowadays, social networks are very extended in our society. Probably you are in some of them or you have a relative or a friend who are in them.

In the following video, you can see a quick and plain explanation about how a social network works and the basic features of social networking websites.

In these kinds of websites you can share information, upload photos, videos or whatever you want with your friend list. Furthermore, people use social networks with the purpose of finding jobs, meeting new people and finding partners. Many people have even located friends, who they didn’t know about them since they were at school or university.

What is more, social networks let you keep in touch with people from all over the world.

But, how far can your privacy be kept safe? Sometimes, people who you don’t know, or you don’t want that they know about your life, can see your profile or information about you or your family. What I mean, you will never know 100% who is behind the other screen. This video called “Protecting Reputations Online” can help you with this issue, you can find it in the web site Common Craft, where you can also watch other videos related to other social networks, blogging, etc.

Even President Obama gives some advice on how to use social networks:

So, when you use a social network, you should take care with what you publish and the information you share, since your privacy depends on this.
