Sh*t New Yorkers Say

Today we saw this great video in class.

After watching the video, I wanted to find out where it came from and I’m not completely sure. It can be found on Eliot Glazer’s channel on Youtube, but I can’t find if it belongs to a collection. Reading the information about the video, the people starring are himself and his sister, Illana Glazer. The previous links are both their personal blogs, but they have both another site each with where they have their own web series.

Illana’s web series is called Broad City, and Eliot’s It Gets Betterish. I haven’t seen any of them, but seeing this video I bet they do have good stuff there.

Well, I showed this video and asked my students to write a dialogue using the expressions they heard, and here is the result. Hope you like it.

And here you are the example we did two years ago.

Thank you, Eva C., Keyla, Diego and Ariadna for letting me recording you and using it here.

It’s all about Videos!!!

What’s the first thing that pops into your head when I say VIRAL? Some of you would think epidemic, but I’m sure, most of you went straight back to that Viral Video you saw lately and you can’t get out of your head.

Nowadays, the way people become FAMOUS has less to do with their skills or their artistry, but with their ability to reach to the people through the media and mainly via Internet.  These days, it’s all about becoming trending topic (in Twitter) or better, a viral Video in YouTube! (Top Ten current viral videos in YouTube)

YouTube is a video sharing website, on which users can upload, view and share videos about unlimited topics. At the beginning, most of the content was being uploaded by individuals with no economical intentions, but lately, it has become the new way of advertising  and it has served as a mirror for anyone who wants to try to become famous.

An early example of the social impact of YouTube was the success of The Bus Uncle video in 2006. Later ” Charlie Bit my Finger” (2007)  became such viral that it actually holds the record for the most views for a non-music video, with over 600 million views.

The most viewed music video ever is the Gangnam Style by PSY.  It was added on July 2012, and became the first YouTube video to receive over 1 billion views on December 2012.

It’s also worth mentioning the enormous impact  it’s having in music industry since 2011 when YouTube launched its own weekly music chart and even today, the Billboard Charts have began to include online streams in its Top 100 lists, allowing the popularity of YouTube videos to influence the position of a song in the charts.

Finally, here you have a recent review of 2013’s most watched videos made by YouTube as a way to say goodbye to 2013 and hello to 2014!

Pronunciation mistakes

This is a classic on this blog. Our famous lists of mistakes. This time it’s referred to the podcasts you recorded last week. We are going to include everything I promised.

First of all, here you are the presentation. Please read it, as I’ve added words to the sounds. After reading it, please follow the instructions given on the last slide.

Secondly, you can visit the link to the sound chart of our book, where you have the examples seen in class.

Now you can watch now again the video “We are sinking”, Remember that good pronunciation can save lives.

Then you can see what happens when you mispronounce a foreign language, yes, that nobody will understand what you mean.

Finally, I want you to pay attention to Fergie as she says “I can’t go any further than this”, you’ll see exactly how /ð/ is pronounced. Pay attention at 1:20.
